In 1992 the Vatican decided that a mistake had been made in the Inquisition’s judgment, which decision Mr. Reston consider^ grudging. This event may have been the inspiration for Mr. Reston’s compelling book, but the story he tells would be intellectually stirring whenever it was published. The issues of religion’s truth and the state’s role in it, and the politics of science are as alive and well today as thev were in 1633.
