Judiciously

Since my article “A Mother Searches for the ‘Right School’” appeared on Jan. 25, I have become more familiar with Rappahannock Elementary' School through volunteering and talking with staff members.
1 have discovered that the teachers are more judicious in their use of videos than 1 had perceived in my first visits. In my article, I mentioned that I had seen four classrooms with TVs playing. 1 didn’t realize that these were all kindergarten classes watching the same 15-minute program on reading skills. The program is coordinated by the school librarian, as are all audio-visual programs shown at the school.
The librarian, Aney Massie, says she ensures that no teacher uses TV to simply occupy children’s time — except in extraordinary circumstances, such as the teacher whom I found showing a Disney movie on the day that she was packing her classroom to move to the new wing.
In fairness to that first-grade teacher (whom 1 purposely did not name), 1 did see her present a solid reading lesson after the movie. A parent-volunteer told me that she had requested this particular teacher for her child, because this teacher sets high standards and sees that the stu
