The Library Board unanimously adopted a budget for the corning year that provides 5 percent raises to employees and adds eight hours to the library aide’s position but only calls for an additional 51,980 from the county, 3,9 percent.
The board's executive committee, made up of the board’s officers, had previewed the budget before bringing it to the full board last Thursday.
The total library budget would increase 7.4 percent from 584,300 to 590,500. The largest increase is in state aid, up 54,415 from the current year according to the best estimate head librarian Patti Holmes could get from Richmond.
The budget amendments Gov. George Allen proposed would have frozen state aid to public libraries, but the General Assembly reinstated the increases originally scheduled to take place during the coming fiscal year.
Up to 25 percent of state aid can be used for salaries. The rest is for books. Income from the endowment fund is projected to increase by 5500. “This.shows we are getting funding from other places, and not depending solely on the county,” board president Roberta Anderson said.
