For people who missed the February concert by The Cristofori Trio at the Theatre at Washington and for the large audience at that concert, there is another opportunity to hear the trio’s spirited playing of works by Mozart this Sunday, March 5 at 3:30 p.m. All six of the trios which Mozart wrote for piano, violin and cello are played during the course of the two concerts.
The Cristofori Trio is part of the Washington Cristofori Ensemble which was formed in 1994 by Martin Berkofsky, its artistic director, and is resident at The Theatre at Washington. The members of the trio are Martin Berkofsky, piano, Judith Spokes, violin and Kang Xia, violoncello.
The all-Mozart program on March 5 includes the trio in B flat, K. 254, the trio in G, K. 496 and the trio in G, K. 564. Mozart was occasionally asked to improvise on the piano in front of his audience, and this he did w'ith great gusto. The Cristofori Trio will revisit this tradition, and add to it a unique twist.
At the conclusion of the last work to be played in the program, Berkofsky will improvise a cadenza on the piano. The audience will have been invited earlier in the concert to join this impromptu, music-making by voting on whether Berkofsky should improvise in the style of baroque, classical, or of 19th century romantic music which is his speciality.”
