Near the end of Route 660 in Chester Gap there has been a dump, brimming with castaways of all types, for as long as anyone can remember.
This area, called “Foot of the Mountain Run,” is one of the headwaters of the Rappahannock River. Beautiful waterfalls are surrounded by many years’ worth of garbage and. trash, thrown down the ravine by uncaring individuals. The area could be a pristine scene with a magnificent view, instead of an eyesore.
Due to the efforts of Hunt Harris of the Ragged Mountain Resource Center, a massive clean-up of the area has been organized for May 4 and 11 to return it to its original unspoiled beauty. Fixing the eyesore is not the only intent of the cleanup; because it is one of the headwaters of the Rappahannock River, which eventually flows into the Chesapeake Bay, many people downstream of this county are also ready to help. “If the water here is not protected then it will not be good for the economic development in Fredericksburg and other regions along the Rappahannock River,” said Mr. Harris.
John P. Tippett, Executive Director of the Friends of the Rappahannock group based in Fredericksburg, hopes to send a contingent of 20 to 25 members to help.
