County Administrator John McCarthy reported that the communications bill adopted by Congress recently will restrict but not eliminate county control over cellular phone towers. The county cannot ban such towers, Mr. McCarthy said, but can try to regulate where they are located.
He also reported that some of the bills introduced in the General Assembly that concern the county are doing well from the county’s point of view. Sludge is dead for this year. The bill to allow the county to continue using paper ballots awaits the governor’s signature. The assembly is taking a less restrictive approach to applying the provisions of the Chesapeake Bay Act to counties west of Interstate 95. There are several concerns the county still has about what the eventual state budget will be, but Mr. McCarthy said not much will be known about how the county will fare until the end of the week. “It is all in how the pot is being stirred,” he said.
The board approved a suggestion by Hampton District representative Mike Massie that the-county thank Del. Jay Katzen, R-31st District, for his help during this session.
