In the meantime word of how the county will fare in the state’s final budget is held up by interesting power plays in the General Assembly.
House Speaker Thomas W. Moss Jr., D-Norfolk, signed an agreement with the Republican co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, John H. Chichester, R-Stafford, Sunday, but the Democratic co-chairman, Stanley S. Walker, D-Norfolk, has not agreed.
At issue, apparently is the role of Sen. Virgil Goode, D-Franklin. Sen. Goode single-handedly forced the existing power-sharing agreement in the evenly split 20-20 Senate. Some legislators contend, that Sen. Chichester wants to reward Sen. Goode by placing him on the joint committee — something irritating to most Senate Democrats.
House Democrats said Monday they don’t care who the Senate representatives are — Goode or no Goode.
The joint committee’s first report is scheduled for Thursday, and its final report on the budget is due March 9, the day the legislature adjourns. Once the report is presented each chamber must adopt the budget before it is sent to the governor for his signature.
