Students Charged
With Drug Use

Five students were caught smoking marijuana behind the RCHS gym last Friday.
According to Deputy Ronnie Dodson of the Sheriffs Office, the students, all boys, are being charged with possession of marijuana. Their ages are 14, 15, 15, 16 and 17. One of the 15 year-olds was also charged with distribution or possession with intent to sell, give or distribute marijuana while on school property, which is a felony. The possession charge is a misdemeanor, according to both Deputy Dodson and Major Rick Mac Welch.
Three of the five boys were also charged with possession of tobacco products on school property.
A letter from Principal Jack Raines about the incident was sent home with RCHS students on Monday. In part, it said, “On Friday, March 1, 1996 I caught 5 students smoking marijuana behind the high school gymnasium. After calling the parents, the sheriffs office was called to deal with the problem. After a lonjg process, the students were charged with possession of narcotics in a Drug Free Zone which could be a felony...I am giving you this information to let you know that we are aware of these matters and are trying our best to provide a drug free and safe environment for your children...To hear the Miranda Rights being read to 5 students in my school was an unpleasant experience.”
Principal Raines said that the students have all been suspended pending school board action.
