Governor George Allen was in New Hampshire endorsing Senator Robert Dole for the Republican nomination for President.
Allen has been running for elective office practically all his adult life, and it is pretty clear he has ambitions beyond the expiration of his term as governor in January, 1998.
The most likely course would be for Allen to run for U.S. Senate when the present term of Democrat Charles S. Robb ends in the year 2000.
Allen is young enough to follow that scenario and possibly play for his party’s nominations for vice president in 2004 or even 2008.
But if he has future political ambitions, he is faced with the dilemma of what to do between the time he leaves office as governor and the year or so of his life it would take to seek the Senate seat since there will be almost two years of dead space.
