As a member of the House of Delegates he frequently stirred the pot by railing against any Democratic efforts to expand government. As Governor, he has tried, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, to cut, back the state’s role in many areas, ' most notably welfare. He has learned the hard way that his Jeffersonian thinking is not always welcomed by an opposition party that usually gives only lip service to the famous Monticello resident.
In modem times only two former Virginia governors have played roles on the national stage, albeit brief. They were Robb and L. Douglas Wilder.
