The Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution opposing continued VDOT study of a Sperryville bypass.
It was similar but not identical to one adopted by the Planning Commission.
Piedmont District representative Charles K. “Pete” Estes suggested the amendment saying the Board of Supervisors “requests consideration be delayed for a connector, bypass or any such project for Sperryville to some future time as determined by the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors.”
He said, “I would personally be in favor of a bypass but not as VDOT presented it and not in connection with a subdivision.”
Mr. Estes said 75 percent of his constituents opposed the bypass and “therefore I must vote in opposition. When somebody’s child or an elderly person is mauled by a truck in Sperryville I don’t want to be involved.”
“You’re trying to close the door but not lock it,” Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Robert Anderson said.
Several people had spoken for the resolution during the public comment portion of Monday’s meeting.
