bloodbath typically portrayed by PETA. I missed my first opportunity at a nice buck on the opening day of muzzleloader season when my shot was deflected, either by branches or brush. It was an embarrassing moment when the smoke cleared and the buck calmly looked around, more curious than frightened by the shot, before bounding, unharmed, into a thicket.
My wife Debbie, my son Jason and I all love the taste of venison. Four of my deer went into the freezer and the fifth was given to a neighbor whose hunting was curtailed this year by a medical condition. Neither of my bucks (a spike and an 8-point) were “trophies” to me, but I would have had no qualms about having them mounted if they had been. I enjoy looking at my deer mounts and antlers, as well as pictures going back into the 60s, to recall previous hunts and remember the variety of emotions felt during those past outings.
My taking of the does will help maintain a healthy, balanced population for the future in accordance with the recommendations of trained game biologists, not those of emotional zealots. My purchase of guns, licenses, and ammunition and equipment will aid wildlife through excise faxes specifically designated for that purpose. Hunters quietly assist state and federal wildlife officials in purchasing habitat and establishing reasonable limits and seasons consistent with the survival of various species.
On the other hand, PETA’s efforts to “save” animals generally consist of outrageous publicity stunts, usually performed for invited media representatives. Chaining themselves to gates to disrupt scheduled public hunts, dressing as animals and chanting about animal exploitation when the circus comes to town, getting “celebrities” to pose naked rather than wear furs, raiding turkey farms before Thanksgiving, and similar acts are staged to optimize media coverage
