The area is mostly a steep ravine which is filled with all manner of junk, large and small. An inventory taken last Friday afternoon included tires, refrigerators, stoves,. water heaters, kerosene heaters, stovepipe, drywall buckets, mattresses, quart size oil containers, bed springs, bricks, a lawn chair, a bathtub, bottles, cans, rusty 55-gallon drums, electronic equipment, a pallet, and even a boot. The area has been known to be a popular spot for doing oil changes on cars, and that is evident.
The property is owned by Bill Henkle, who owns Henkle Harris Furniture in Winchester and is partowner of the Shenandoah Golf Course. According to Sheriff Gary Settle, who is a friend of Mr. Henkle’s, he has owned the property for six to seven years and is very happy about the clean-up.
County Administrator John McCarthy said the county will pay for the disposal of all the material cleaned up and will have it transported to the landfill. A front end loader and dump truck and trash bags will be provided, and a contractor will be on site, he said.
