Hampton District representative Mike Massie led off the public comment period at the Board of Supervisors , meeting Monday evening with a humorous speech on why the dumpsters should remain open. J /

He said it had been argued that the dumpsters be kept open because otherwise people will just throw their trash on the side of the road. “The common low life people should set public policy,” he said, not the elected representatives or “the fine” people who had come out to speak at the meet* . •ng. J

He said the supervisors could not have, chosen two “more perfect locations” for dumpsters than Scrabble witli its historic Black school and Huntly “as close as possible td a primary road so you can not only see it but smell it, close to a stream....We don’t want to take personal responsibili* ty—Mr. Chairman, closing the dumpsters down is not the American way,” he concluded.

Roger Welch took on the challenge of answering that “I appreciate Mike’s attempt at humor, because that’s all it was. We have collected over 1,600 signatures. The people believe we can correct the problems.” He said he under* stood that for people who use the Scrabble dumpsters a trip to the landfill instead would be 70 miles round trip.

Frank Huff said he agreed. “It’s pretty clear what people prefer. It’s not pleasant, but it is a matter of convenience.” —

Henry Gorfein, speaking for county Democrats, said the supervisors had to do “everything possible toVind an acceptable trash disposal solution.” He said whatever solu- ■ tion the supervisors come up with, they should see* citizen input

Jack Dwyer said, “Over half of the voters disagree with the action you enunciated of closing the dumpsters without any alternative.” 1 * .

William Foster suggested the county consider creating its own trash hauling service. “It’s amazing there hasn’t been a lawsuit at Huntly” he said, because of people getting _ htirt crawling around in the dumpsters.
