Dumpsters Revisited
Perhaps the Board of Supervisors is on the verge of a breakthrough in finding a central location for trash and recycling. If so the whole process may have been worthwhile, and Mike Massie’s statement that nothing would happen as long as the dumpsters remained open has been, at least partially, supported by subsequent events. ' It seems that the threat of facing constituents with no alternative to driving to Amissville or paying someone else to do it has pushed the issue to the forefront and forced some hard decisions.
And perhaps it was necessary to face those who find the dumpsters in Scrabble and Huntly convenient with the prospect of driving to Amissville to make them reconcile themselves to driving to a location near Washington.
At Monday’s meeting the supervisors agreed to pursue purchasing property between the two schools for such a purpose and to use ' the condemnation process if necessary. • They now must deal with a budget that provides no funds for operating such a center. They must also push the project along realty fast if they are to meet their self-imposed July 1 deadline.
It .seems likely it will not be possible to have such a center open in time, but the votes appear to be there to keep the current dumpsters open in the meantime. " Mr. Massie and Ron Frazier are not happy with this turn of fevents. Mr. Massie felt people unwilling to make the drive should have been willing to pay someone else to do it for them rather than relying on tax funds.
Mr. Frazier feels his constituents, who have the landfill in their heighborhood, should not have to pay taxes to provide a more convenient place for the rest of the county’s residents to take their (rash.
Their views are understandable, but clearly most county residents are prepared to pay the taxes to have such a facility open.
Arts Fest '96
The elementary school has just completed a very successful arts festival. Clearly most of the children enjoyed the opportunity to experience a variety of the visual and performing arts.
Their education has been greatly enriched by the artists in Rappahannock County who shared their talents with the county’s young people.
