In the meantime other artists were working with other classes. They made refrigerator magnets and puppets. They illustrated their life stories and learned to dance. Two groups had the chance to hear Hopi Indian stories. Others learned about Chinese art or the use of color.
On Tuesday high school Spanish students joined the elementary school. One group taught third-graders to make Mola, an art form used by the San Bias Indians in Guatamala sort of like reverse aplique, with layers of cloth revealed by cutouts. The class used colored construction paper.
Another group of high school Spanish students taught the Mexican hat dance in the gymnasium to very enthusiastic elementary school students.
Maggie Rogers taught older elementary students how to turn cartoons into three-dimensional puppets. In the afternoon she worked with younger students on modeling with salt clay.
Ned Bittinger talked to a group about illustrating books and showed slides of his work for two children’s books. He showed that the illustrator has to leave a light colored area for the words to be added.
