I am writing in response to a response to a respohse to an article printed March 13, 1996, titled, “County Senior Is Tops in World of Science.

The article was accurate as it was printed, and Ms. Lofton’s letter of retraction (March 20) was unnecessary and less accurate than the original article.

The scores that Ms. Lofton quoted in her Letter to the Editor were from the SATs, and while it is true that these scores would lead one to believe that the English curriculum is equally strong as the math curriculum at RCHS, the scores from the SAT IIs clearly show the deficiency in the English curriculum.

For anyone whd is unfamiliar with the difference between the two tests, the SAT IIs test a broader range of writing and math skills than do the SATs. Furthermore, the SATs do not test grammar, usage, and punctuation as do the SAT IIs. Perhaps most importantly, and in contrast to the SATs, the SAT IIs are directly correlated to the amount of learning that has occurred in the English classroom. For these reasons, Ms. Lofton’s quoting of SAT scores was of dubious relevance. Finally, whenever one is look
