In true competitive debate each speaker would also get to question one person on the other side, and there would be rebuttal speeches with the affirmative side having the last say. In the abbreviated version in class the students’ classmates judged the competition and voted overwhelmingly for the negative side. Mr. Heddleston pointed out that the affirmative side has the greater burden because they must propose a change while the negative side can hold out for current conditions.
Mr. Heddleston believes Rappahannock students can compete with the best in forensics, which involves prepared speeches and interpretive readings as well as three kinds of debate and extemporaneous speaking. “They have natural skills and are extroverted,” he said. “I don’t believe other schools have students with such great personalities.”
