A Virginian to run for vice president on a Republican ticket headed by Senator Robert Dole?
Might be a good idea and there are a couple who might be available, namely Colin Powell and Gov. George Allen.
The assets Powell would bring to a GOP ticket are obvious. After all, polls currently show Dole losing to President Clinton but beating him if his running mate were Powell. It is not often a mere vice presidential prospect can make such a dramatic change in poll results.
Though putting Powell on the ticket would alienate what must now be called the Buchanan-Perot wing of the party, its positive effects would more than offset any loss.
Yet it must be emphasized that this is true only in polls taken now and that if Powell were actually chosen by Dole things could change.
Powell, after all, has never been in the political arena, and it has a way of diminishing not enhancing someone’s stature. Voters might tend to see Powell in an entirely different light if he has to go out’ and debate
