Rep. Wolf said, “1 vote against tobacco every chance I get.” He said he eliminated pork barrel highway demonstration projects when he became chairman of the transportation committee, and his appropriations bill was out “in plenty of time.” He said he is “not a partisan person.”
Rep. Wolf said, “We’re trying to reduce government. We have zeroed out a lot of programs, but we have to be compassionate to people working at these agencies.”
He said, “We passed what I thought was a good budget, but he [the President] doesn’t have to sign the bills we sent him.”
“1 would like my government to be like 1 was taught in elementary school, with leaders like George Washington,” he said. However, he noted that both parties are taking money from “the gambling industry.”
He said that on Thursday the House of Representatives passed bills to make health insurance portable and make it illegal to refuse to insure someone because of a pre-existing condition and also giving the President the line-item veto.
He said there is some fraud, waste and abuse in government, but eliminating that will only go a small way to reducing the deficit. “We can’t be all things to all people,” he said.
In discussing a growing disparity between rich and poor, Rep. Wolf blamed competition from countries that employ people at “slave” wages. He said there should be corporate responsibility and he feels it is wrong for a CEO to fire people and give - himself a raise, but “we want to maintain the ladder of mobility. We’re not a perfect country, but there still is opportunity, mobility, creativity.”
