Keeping Promises
Fresh from votes to increase the debt ceiling and keep the government open through April 24, Congressman Frank R. Wolf, R-lOth District, met with Rappahannock citizens in a town meeting at the county library Friday afternoon.
He said both sides made mistakes in the impasse that shut the government down, and that took attention away from the effort to balance the budget.
He said the Republican Party had kept its promises to the voters, passing almost all the proposals in the Contract with America. He said remaining business includes passing the budget and a tax reduction that includes cutting taxes on capital gains and giving a $500 per child tax credit to families.
He defended his environmental record saying he had voted against a bill that would have “gutted” the clean water act and promoting additions to the National Park system. He said Congress had favored “more of a balance” in wetlands legislation.
One voter read out a litany of complaints against Congress and the government. “Congress has little concern for the average citizen....The national capital is a disgrace....Whit’s wrong that you can’t get a budget passed? It’s politics as usual. The government is out of control, like an octopus with tobacco grower subsidies, boosters flown to football games and tax shelters for business while the working class is struggling to stay ajive.It seems all elected officials care about is parties, political or otherwise.”
