if that dog doesn’t work out, for any reason at all. At any other time, bdt not for a refund, the dog can be returned, for example, if the family is moving away. If a dQg has a behavioral problem and needs training, he can be brought back for training, said Ms. Walters.
A RAWL tag goes on every dog so that if he is ever lost, he can be traced back to the owner through RAWL’s records.
Due to the success of RAWL’s adoption program at Petsmart, rarely is a dog put down at the shelter. According to Ms. Reid, last year two dogs were put down due to viciousness. Two died from parvovirus, two from distemper and one from unknown causes. During 1995, they took in 190 strays, plus 101 dogs that were giveaways. The giveaways are taken to the shelter for various reasons. Some reasons that people get rid of dogs are that they shed too much, get after chickens or sheep, are not housebroken, owners are moving, grew too big, do not get along with other dogs or cats or children.
Many of the people who adopt dogs from RAWL at Petsmart are loyal customers. They come back arid adopt another dog, or just come in and help when Shelter volunteers bring in dogs on the weekend. Dr. Don Bartlett is one of those customers. He has adopted two large dogs from RAWL at Petsmart and said he has had really good success with both of them. He was helping the crew . last Saturday, walking Quincy, a large male dalmation, around the front of the store, introducing him to visitors, and basically giving him lots of attention.
Adoptive parents are also encouraged to bring their dogs back to Petsmart to visit with the RAWL people, so they can see how they are doing once they’ve been in a new home for a while.
Once the day for the RAWL group ended at about 5 p.m., Dr. Bartlett, like many other parents of adopted dogs, got in line to pay for a shopping cart full of pet food and other goodies to take home.
