He testified that the allegations of sexual abuse made by the girl against her father when she was 2 1/2 years old and against Mr. Stewart which she said happened when she was five years old were remarkably similar in detail. The particular type of sexual abuse which had been described by the girl is fairly rare, he said.
When asked by Mr. Clark what he thought about someone remembering what color they were wearing or the brand name of their clothing worn during an alleged abuse, Mr. Guyer responded, unless it was an extraordinary individual, “I would say that is not a memory; it is something other than a memory....It is very suspect. There are other explanations for that,” he said. The girl had earlier testified that she remembered those details.
Dr. Guyer, who recently testified for the prosecution in the Menendez trial in Los Angeles, also said he believes that if a person remembers less about details of an incident, it is more likely to be true.
Testifying for the prosecution, Dr. Linda Bissett, a licensed psychiatrist from Maryland who specializes in child sexual abuse and domestic violence, said that she has known trie girl since 1986 when she began seeing her as her therapist. She diagnosed the girl as having post traumatic stress disorder which she believed stemmed from sexual abuse. She disagreed with Dr. Guyer, saying that she believed that trie specific type of sexual abuse which trie girl alleged was very common, and that she believes children have very good memories foi traumatic events. She said that some people remember details and some block them out.
