You’ve probably heard them, the male cicadas, that is.
Their “singing,” which has really become prominent in the past week, can be heard as a loud shrill (and annoying) sound constant throughout the day. The sound is produced by a thin membrane at the base of the male’s abdomen that vibrates like the top of a drum. They are usually quiet during the night and cloudy weather.
