year at UVa, praises the Echols program for giving her the freedom to explore her wide-ranging interests.
She was able to take an upperlevel biology course with an acclaimed professor simply because she was an Echols Scholar. She has also enjoyed living in a dormitory reserved for Echols Scholars.
The Echols program confers no money. Instead it offers these advantages to students:
• Freedom from having to take required courses. This is a feature that Jim likes, as he has no desire for further English courses.
• The option to graduate from UVa without having to declare a major. This gives students much freedoiji to explore diverse subjects, something that pre-med students like Shannon find particularly helpful.
• A personal adviser.
• First crack at registering for courses, which almost guarantees Echols Scholars a place in the most prized classes.
• The opportunity to live with other Echols Scholars in the first year, which often proves to the basis of enduring friendships among the most motivated students on campus.
Jim already knows that one of his roommates next year will be a friend he met at the Governor’s School, who also was tapped to be an Echols Scholar.
Dr. Vandersee said his admissions committee will be watching to see if Rappahannock County High School continues producing Echols Scholars.
