request of groups opposed to bypasses on U.S. 50 for Middleburg and Aldie. Actually Mr. Lockwood and Loudoun residents were looking at an 18-mile stretch of U.S. 50 from U.S. 15 west to Paris. In a series of day-long workshops residents had proposed a variety of traffic calming measures to slow traffic down going through the villages along U.S. 50, and maps of their work in Aldie and Upperville were on the wall of the high school auditorium for those attending the meeting to see.
During a slide show and presentation using an overhead projector, Mr, Lockwood explained that traffic calming measures are used about every 400 yards to slow traffic. These measures range from installing rumble strips (sections of asphalt are replaced with cobblestone), to traffic circles and speed bumps or the longer speed humps. At intersections speed humps can be flattened and raised to sidewalk height, eliminating the need for curb cuts for handicapped access.
The purpose of all of this is to slow down traffic going through villages or towns.
