You also incorrectly tried to tie Mr. Longyear and myself together with the Goals 2000 informational meeting of May 29th and the requested Supervisor’s hearing on the matter. Believe it or not we did not act in unison but independently as we are both able to think and act on our own convictions. I may have set myself up for criticism but not an attack.
You owe me and the public a chance to debate this on-going issue in an unbiased manner or your published editorial stand is meaningless.
The School Board and the superintendenjt are solely responsible for this controversy as they are the ones who publicly sought to coerce our Governor in the beginning. Then Mr. Makela brings me into the fray with his April 24 letter which incorrectly stated I was the only constituent that complained to him about Goals 2000.
1 made one campaign promise to the people of Jackson District and that was to work hard to represent them. I also took an oath of office to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia and all local laws and ordinances. Now it seems that I’m dealing with a newspaper editor and others who have not read or don’t understand the language of these precious documents or the founders intent of the role of government.
It is not bullying to ask elected and appointed officials to be accountable; and if you want me to back away from my previous stated obligations, you can forget it as I have no authorization to do so and can not!
I suppose your editorial means that I won’t be receiving the Rappahannock News 1996 Citizen of the Year Award. That doesn’t bother me in the least because I care more about working hard for the people 1 represent than any favorable words you might print about me in your paper.
On the other hand, you have no right to print lies about me. So, let’s sit the record straight: I’m in favor of quality education for our children, and I’m no bully.
