An 18-year veteran of the Senate, John Warner, won his third term in 1990 with 82 percent of the vote.
A poll last year found Sen. Warner more popular with Democrats than Republicans — a result of his campaign against North’s Senate bid two years ago. But now Sen. Warner is positioning himself as a traditional conservative in his own campaign.
Rep. Davis is optimistic. “It’s never been done before, but we’re going to make a strong effort to bring out the occasional Republican voter and independents and Democrats. I think a number of people feel the Senator’s independence is worthy of their support.”
