Tips to Reduce
Exposure to
Air Pollution
As weather begins to warm up, many people go outside and exercise. However, the American Lung association of Virginia (ALAV) warns that for many Virginians who live in highly polluted areas, exercise can lead to serious health problems. During Clean Air Month, ALAV is drawing attention to the link between air pollution and its effects on lung health.
“While exercising, we are more vulnerable to air pollutants.because we breathe more air, drawing it deeply into our lungs,” said Kirk E. Hippenstell, MD, ALAV President.
Research has found that air pollution can reduce breathing ability and cause chest pain, coughing, wheezing and other physical irritation. Children, the elderly, pregnant women, asthma sufferers and others with lung disease must be particularly careful when exercising outdoors during high air pollution days.
Exposure to air pollution while exercising can be reduced by following these simple guidelines:
• Avoid exercise and strenuous outdoor activity midday or in the afternoon when ozbne pollution levels are highest.
» Avoid congested streets and rush hour traffic since motor vehicles produce high levels of carbon monoxide.
• Be aware of the quality of air you breathe by following the ozone advisory in newspapers and weather reports.
