Season Closes

On May 17 the WCDS boys’ lacrosse team finished the season with a 6 and 5 record after losing 7 to 3 to Queen Anne’s School in the consolation game at the Mercersburg Academy tournament.

The Owls were able to field a team of just seven players. According to.Coach Fred Chandler in spite of being short three players and temperatures. in the 90s, “The Owls — in u^ual form —didn’t cave-in and turned potential devastation into a jqjpl^nt performance.” ^.jThe Owls held on to a 3-3 tie thspygh the third quarter. However, th&y .“couldn’t keep up the manic pade and allowed four unanswered fourth-quarter goals.” “"He said the seven boys “stepped up today, some in positions they had never- played before.” Jacob Konick hflii a*“great defensive performance.” Afc^Our program has always faced challenges and has always faced them .vtfelt,” Coach Chandler said. “Regardless of how many boys we have — 20, 11, or like today, 7 — we aw^Ju-epared and willing to battle anyone. The seven boys out here today struggled and thrived against staggering odds. They really played their,guts out. I’m deeply proud of their,ieffort and am proud to end our sdason in a way that really showed the~character and perseverance of tfiese1 players....Today’s effort was btfldr spirited and heroic — a game tftift we’ll remember for a very long time.” ‘'"'In an earlier tournament game the Owls'went down 10-6 to Mercersburg i^eerdemy. ^"'ftCHS senior Mark Jenkins ran ninth in the 3200 meter run in the state track meet Saturday.

..This brings to a close a distinguished high school career during \yjijfh he consistently ran ahead of the pack for the Panthers in track and

country. Mark plans to attend Mary Washington College next year and to continue to compete in running events.
