But none of the invaders, with their armies and their lords, with their gallows and their torture-racks, could ever conquer the Irish people. Irish history is a story of suffering and endurance, of waiting out the worst in life, be it slavery or war, famine or exile.
The only real conqueror of Ireland was himself a former slave, a young man bom in ancient Gaul who was taken captive at the age of 16 and sent to Ireland where he herded cattle for six years before escaping back to his homeland. After becoming a priest, he returned to Ireland about the year 445 A.D. In the next 20 years, he made a more lasting impression on this stubborn country than all the Viking warriors, Norman kings, and English lords managed to do over the next 15 centuries.
