The Wood Thrush, the finest of all songbirds, has suffered a 25 percent population reduction in the last twenty years. Some of this is a result of destruction of the winter habitat of the Wood Thrush in the American tropics but much is due to increased predation by cowbirds.
All three species are native to North America and a part of our wondrous and varied wildlife. The problem is that through man’s changes on the landscape, their populations are dangerously out of control. This presents a moral and ethical dilemma for those of us who value wildlife “...natural, wild and free” to use the words of Aldo Leopold in A Sand County Almanac. Canada Geese and Whitetailed Deer are no longer wild, nor are they natural and free.
