by world-renown architects Andres Duany and his wife Elizabeth PlaterZyberk, Kentlands has attracted visitors from as close as Virginia and as far away as Siberia.
Fauquier County planning officials and local citizens visited the community last year, curious to see what a similar project planned for this county could look like.
Clark Wagner, director of urban design for the city of Gaithersburg said Kentlands has presented planners with many challenges.
For example, Wagner said, the long, straight streets, key to Duany’s original design, have encouraged speeding. Initially, housing sales suffered at Kentlands during the real estate slump in 1990. Builders quickly adjusted, dropping prices to reflect market values, but critics charge it has still a long way to go to attract lower-income home buyers.
Gaithersburg officials are already planning to build a sister development adjacent to Kentlands.
Called Lakelands, it is another large Duany-styled development that will be built on several hundred acres acquired from the National Geographic Society. It is expected to be finished in 2005. Planners expect the two massive developments to function as one.
Midtown, the large town center as it has become to be known, has been the most controversial aspect of the development, giving planners quite a few headaches, Wagner said. It has been redesigned several times. When finished, it should resemble the Reston Town Center.
