She also painted fantasy art for a while, but found that her heart and her talent both lie with portraits. Her senior show in college was all portraits.
She has many other favorite artists — John Singer Sargent probably being her favorite. “I love the Flemish masters,” she said. Vermeer, Gainsborough, and Maxfield Parrish are others she admires.
When she teaches art, said Mrs. Powell, she teaches her students from the ground up. “You have to teach the powers of observation,” she said.. She tells students “draw what you see, not what you think.”
She would never allow a student to work from a photograph, because she said they need to see how something appears in space. A camera distorts an image, she said. She believes that students have to learn to draw before they can learn to do an oil painting, and that artists always have to school themselves. Though she has worked in oils and acrylic, she is hoping to take a class in oil portraits with Sperryville artist Ned Bittinger.
Mrs. Powell is the director of the Christian Arts Forum at 44 Winchester Street in Warrenton (at the Warrenton Bible Fellowship Church), which is an organization promoting a place for arts within the Christian community.
The group has a drama team which produces plays and skits. It also- hosts “Saturday Night Express,” an open mike coffee house held on the third Saturday of every month where people can read their poetry, exhibit their artwork or play music. Also, the group plans to publish an anthology of poetry, prose and drawings once a year.
