This is the first of a three part series on the history and habits of Brown-headed Cowbirds
Recently a friend said: “It’s time you did something about cowbirds.” This meant, of course, write about them. How I wish I could really ‘do something’ about the increasing population of the Brown-headed Cowbird.
That dilemma is as complex and frustration as the dangerously over abundant White-tailed Deer. In that case I advocate enlisting and educating hunters to help control a deer population that has the potential for doubling itself annually. More liberal hunting laws would be a partial solution though I know even that is fraught with emotion that summons up Bambi.
Increasing >wmbers of resident Canada Geese are also a serious threat. Geese are smart birds. They have figured out that instead of making long and hazardous flights to their traditional wintering grounds in the southeast they should just stay put and benefit from the abundance of grain and enjoy the ponds and lakes that dot the upper Virginia Piedmont.
