His name was Patrick, and the faith that he brought to the fiercely independent Celts here is part of the defining character of these people, part of their great capacity for suffering and endurance, for hope amidst despair. Ireland’s faith and hope has been rewarded in our century with independence and a kind of prosperity never before known in this land — though its “troubles” are far from ended, as the struggle over the future of Ulster, England’s last colony in Ireland, goes on.
On Monday, I will hang out my Irish flag and lift of glass of cheer, and thank St. Patrick for the faith of my fathers, for the endurance of Ireland, and for the hope and promise that abides in my own children and grandchildren.
