The Middle Street Gallery in Washington, Va., will feature an exhibit entitled “Views of Rappahannock” beginning May 2 and running through May 25. And what views they are.
Local artist Lois Manookian has used her considerable talent to put together a series of 16 works of art done in watercolors, chalk and several pieces done as a combination of the two.
Lois is primarily a landscape painter and has previously done a series on the Caribbean which showed at the Rappahannock County Library several years ago. But this show deals exclusively with scenic vistas from the county- tyLois
began working on this show about two years ago. “As a professional artist you tend to be always pointing toward a show, but I paint because I’m inspired by the scenery. It’s no accident that there are quite a few artists living here,” she said.
She feels one of the strongest works in the show is a painting of a winter scene with trees, very stark and dramatic.
The paintings range in size from 11 by 13 inches to 27 by 34 inches, very large for a watercolor. There are many views of breathtaking local landscapes and all the seasons have been given equal attention, such as “Summer on Old Rag” and “Fall on the Hills.”
