country hit songs, Karen does the news, some “infotainment,” runs the commercials, gives weather forecasts, and answers the phones. On the FM station, the country hits are preselected by a music consultant. When Ms. Henderson was on the AM station, she played her own records, and said that once in a while she would break into song.
Her voice training came when she studied opera from the ages of 13 to 17. She was accepted to Juillard, but was told she was too young to attend and would have to wait a year. By then, her life was going in another direction, so she never did get to go to Juillard.
But, she vigorously pursued the singing and has been singing professionally ever since. She remembers the days of singing at Mr. Henry’s in Georgetown. At the same time, Roberta Flack was singing at the Mr. Henry’s on Capitol Hill. “She got discovered and I spent the next 20 years in Bailey’s Crossroads,” said Ms. Henderson.
