Judge Robertson admonished Mr. Newman for having a lot of convictions on his record since he was placed on probation.
Another violator of probation, 33year-old Matthew Jeffries, was in court before Judge Carleton Penn on Monday. Mr. Jeffries had absconded to Florida, and following a run-in with law enforcement there, was extradited and brought back to the Rappahannock County Jail last week.
Moving to Florida without advising his probation officer was Mr. Jeffries’s most serious violation of probation.
He has also had several other violations over the past several years, including use of alcohol and drugs, not maintaining stable employment, failing to pay court costs, and committing other crimes, among them trespassing and petit larceny.
Mr. Jeffries said that he had gone to Florida because his brother was terminally ill, but Judge Penn said that he went about it the wrong way.
He should have spoken with the court about it and maybe they could have alleviated his situation by transferring his probation to Florida.
