He met the criteria for a heart transplant: You must be referred by a cardiologist; you must not drink or smoke; you cannot suffer from any malignancy; and you cannot be immuno compromised (or taking anything that could cause the immune system to be weakened).
Mr. Embrey was reviewed by the Transplant Committee and approved in March as a candidate. He’s been in Fairfax Hospital full time since March 23 in the Coronary Care Unit waiting for a heart.
Ruth has meanwhile been doing everything she can to raise money to help pay for the $150,000 transplant and the after care for anti-rejection medication which he must take for three years. Insurance covers about a quarter of the cost and helps out with after care and Ruth recently managed to get the amount of her brother’s insurance increased but that also means a rise in cost for coverage.
