Turnoff Week

A year ago someone wrote a letter to the editor that implied that someone was making money off National TVTumoff Week. At the time my stepmother and a friend of hers were the local organizers of TV-Tumoff Week. They were both volunteers.
I have since learned that there are only three employees at the headquarters of TV-Free America, which sponsors TV-Tumoff Week. The executive director earns $33,000 a year, the assistant director $23,000, and the secretary $18,000. Their money comes from the sale of TV-T\imoff Organizer’s Kits, $10 each, and from charitable grants. They are a nonprofit group. I hope this answers any questions about TV-Tumoff Week, which is April 24-30 this year. This year I am trying to organize the week.
I hope parents will support their children’s efforts to break the TV habit for a week. If Dad insists on watching the news and Mom can’t give up “Good Morning, America,” it will be real hard for the kids. Why not try TV-Tumoff Week as a family? The first few days will be tough, but then there may be some nice surprises when everyone sits longer around the dinner table just talking or plays a pick-up game of softball together. What have you got to lose?
