Several people were strongly in favor of an independently handled survey. Elaine Viguerie, a committee volunteer, commented on the number of county residents at the meeting.
“We need an independent survey of town residents,” she said. “So many, (such as the elderly or ill), won’t come to meetings.”
Mr. Dellevie recounted problems experienced in his community concerning U.S. 29. He, too, recommended that the “survey be done independently rather than with local volunteers” in order to ensure objectivity and privacy.
Mr. Herd originally planned a single mail out to a sample of the town population. He confirmed that the survey could be handled like a census, with one to every mailing address in the town.
Some decision would have to be made concerning how far into the county the survey should be distributed because of the mailing costs involved. The results could be coded to indicate whether the response was from a town resident or a county resident for tabulation purposes.
