I he bactena consume the oxygen and produce hydrogen sulfide or “swamp gas.” The metals precipitate from the water and collect on the bottom. Iron, for example, concentrates into pyrite, a form of bog iron. Naturally forming bog iron was used by early settlers to produce their iron tools.
Both oxidizing and reducing reactions are needed to effectively remove dissolved metals from treated water. The most difficult and important aspect is keeping the organic material in balance with the beneficial bacteria.
