If the guards — worker females — at the entrance to the nest sense a threat to the colony they will attack and sting ferociously. I don’t know the perimeters of this “attack area”; they seemed to follow and sting me no matter how far I run.
Actually, it was those that had attached themselves to my clothes that hung on and stung when I ran after disturbing a nest. I cannot accurately state the distance I ran befqre those not attached turned back; it is not the kind of information I was gathering at the time.
