Data collected this fall by the County Health Department for a sanitation survey, combined with that compiled for the town’s Comprehensive Plan, will aid the council in assessing the potential applicability of artificial wetlands. Proposals received as a result of the council’s RFP last May are also expected to address use of these technologies.
Mr. Tompkins sees this green technology as having additional side benefits. Besides being much cheaper than standard treatment systems, it requires minimal training to operate, would provide critically needed firefighting support, and could help minimize the impact of summer droughts. Other suggestions include using the water for a town-operated nursery that might provide employment to local citizens, a greenhouse and other facilities combined with horticultural classes at the county high school, or a park like lake area.
