He credits the board of supervisors with tackling a tough issue and making a firm decision.

In terms of issues still facing the county, he thinks the schools will continue to be an issue.

When state fundiiig dries up because there is no more money to fund the mandates the state comes up with it falls to the next level, the counties, to pick up the burden of finding the,money for the schools. And that means increasing real estate taxes.

The county gets none of the credit and all of the burden, he said. No where is it more obvious than in funding for education.

Mr. McCarthy feels the state needs to come up with alternatives to fund public education than by increasing real estate taxes.

He said other states have found other ways of making up
