A clipboard was necessary for me to record the “doings” of nesting bluebirds; I carried one with me at all times to answer such questions as: Were there eggs in the box, if so how many? Was the female incubating or, were there young, and if so, how many? How old did I judge them to be? Important information.
At a nest box nailed to a tree trunk at the edge of the woods, I dropped the clipboard on the ground to free my hands for unlatching the top and opening the nest box. I paid no attention to where the clipboard landed. That was a mistake. It landed on the entrance to a yellow jacket nest. They attacked.
At the first sting, I ran. I was stung repeatedly and painfully. Those not attached to my clothes dropped back and hovered angrily around the clip board. Besides being extremely uncomfortable from many stings, I had a dilemma. How was I to retrieve the clipboard which was essential to my bluebird nest box checking?
I located a stick about six feet long and tried to drag the clipboard toward me. The yellow jackets attacked the stick and the hand holding it. More painful stings. I got a longer stick. Again the insects followed the stick to my hand.
Finally I gave up and went home and nursed my stings with ice. That night, with a
