It is well worth the trip out to Sperryville to see the show the book is an added bonus. The first printing was limited to 60,000 books and is no longer available in many bookstores. For each book sold, Bittinger receives 79 cents. A second printing is planned, but not until Christmas of 1998.
Bittinger, 46, expresses the wonder of childhood fantasy well. What makes his book illustrations such fun is his exciting depiction of dramatic action, as when the young boy on his rocking horse battles a charging war horse and knight. Children, as well as those who are young at heart, can easily relate to Bittinger’s work.
His paintings for the book show fine technique and the supportive details, such as the sailboat in many background scenes, subliminally unifies the book. His use of dramatic light and shadows and a colorfill palette bring life to the scenes.
