in the 1950s and have been seen during periods of snow and ice ever since. They are still rare enough to generate excitement.

I have not mentioned the subdued, yet beautiful, female grosbeak. Her yellow feathers have a dusky overlay that creates a beautiful image.

Nor .have I tried to describe the collective calls — loud and distinctive —- that a flock of these brilliant birds make. The sound is as if clusters of harness bells are being vigorously shaken. Once heard, it is not forgotten.

DSS taking

donations

The Rappahannock County Department of Social Services is accepting donations of food and money to assist families in need. Anyone wishing to make a donation may do so at the social services office on Gay St. in Washington or mail donations to DSS, P.O. Box 87, Washington, Va. 22747. The DSS office is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will close for Christmas Dec. 24 at noon.
