Moore said that VDOT is “developing a traffic calming policy designed to slow traffic. Some roads can be designated for bikes and pedestrians, but that has not proven very effective on gravel roads” out in the country where enforcement is difficult.
Barbara Williams, of the Sperryville Historical Committee, brought up a continuing flooding problem near her home in the Sperryville historic district. Over time, the roads have been built higher and higher. With no drainage system, yards repeatedly flood.
Moore noted that VDOT would look into the problem arid that it would coordinate with the numerous environmental and historical groups concerned with the town’s preservation. Milling down the roadbed and installing drains was a possible solution.
Newbill Miller, of Washington, inteijected that the number of people in the county who do not want any roads are in the minority. He stated that a great deal of effort had gone into the zoning process and that the county had benefitted from it. He was concerned that “this movement against roads will result in a complete turn- around.”
